Evaluations

Within the AVATON project framework, two demonstrations of the system's operation were conducted using handheld computers (PDAs) in the areas of Lesvos and Santorini (Sigri Park and Nea Kameni, respectively). The selection of these specific demonstrations was not random, as these areas exhibit particular characteristics and serve as examples of the evolution of volcanic activity in the Aegean region. Moreover, they attract thousands of visitors each year.
The results of the pilot operation were particularly encouraging. Specifically, visitor feedback was generally positive regarding the application of the system, and it was experimentally proven that the system met the needs of guided tours.
Positive aspects highlighted by visitors include:

  • The size and weight of the device facilitated their navigation in the Park. The screen size facilitated the reading of information.
  • The provided information, both for the fossils of the Park and for Nea Kameni, was generally satisfactory. Additionally, positive comments were received regarding the clarity and conciseness of the provided information.
  • Particularly significant was the fact that each visitor had the ability to trace their own path and receive information about the exhibits in front of them.

On the other hand, according to visitor observations, the use of the system presented some weaknesses, such as delays in transmitting information from the server to the handheld computer, as well as difficulties in reading information from the computer screen in cases of intense sunlight. Overall, the innovation of the system lies in the fact that the user-visitor is not isolated from the natural environment. On the contrary, they have the opportunity for personalized navigation in the archaeological site and dynamic acquisition of information about various exhibits. This interactive presentation method makes the acquisition of cultural heritage information more engaging, particularly in the case of geosites where understanding the landscape and appreciating its value is quite challenging without specialized knowledge.
